Hi folks. The bad news is that Seann McKeel was recently diagnosed with HER-2 Positive breast cancer which is an aggressive form of cancer. The good news is that it was caught fairly early as a Stage 2, 2.1 cm lump. She'll begin three months of chemotherapy the week of March 8th, 2020. Post-chemo, she'll have a lumpectomy, then six weeks of radiation. Assuming all goes as planned, she’ll then continue to take suppressant medication for 5 – 10 years. Her prognosis is good.
Unfortunately, Seann is only a couple of weeks into this journey and has already paid a significant amount of money out-of-pocket for medical expenses, including a $5,000 port-a-cath placement surgery deemed out-of-network by her insurance and multiple $80 copays. She has seen and will continue to see the oncologist, the surgeon, and her primary care doctor. There have been and will continue to be ultrasounds, heart ultrasounds, biopsies, and surgeries. In addition to the medical expenses we can predict which already pose a dire financial hardship to Seann, there are the ones we can't predict.
If you know Seann McKeel, you know she moves mountains for those in need. She's a fundraiser for Children's Cancer Association. She's a long-time event coordinator and a fixture in Portland's art and music scene: booking shows, organizing collaborative public art projects, and making gorgeous pottery. If you have ever been to You Who, the totally bonkers kid's variety show in Portland, you have seen Seann's work and you have kind of been inside of her wonderful brain. She conceived that whole thing down to the costumes she made by hand. On top of all of this, she's an incredible friend, mom, and human.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. None of us deserve to go broke because we require cancer treatment, least of all Seann who is THE BEST. Please send a little money her way if you can spare it. We’re very grateful for any help.
