In memory of Jeffrey Tauber

Picture
The Honorable Jeffrey S. Tauber (Ret.) passed away peacefully in his home on November 14, 2024 at the age of 77. Jeff left his mark as an exemplary attorney, judge, activist, author, musician, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He cared deeply about social justice and was his happiest when helping to make a positive difference in people's lives.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jeff earned a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1971 and joined the bench in Alameda County, California in 1985. Dissatisfied by the limited options for offenders with drug addiction, Jeff initiated and presided over the Oakland Drug Court, one of the first in the nation to help expand the use of treatment for healing and recovery. The court received national awards for public service, innovation, and effectiveness.
To further the drug court model nationwide, Jeff went on to help establish and serve as the first president of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. He continued fighting for criminal justice reform as executive director of the Center for Problem Solving Courts. His memoir, "Healing Criminal Justice," creatively chronicles his remarkable career.

A passionate saxophone player, Jeff performed with bands throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and on his world travels. He loved jazz, blues, reggae, calypso—any music that touched people and got them moving. In Jeff's honor, a memorial bench was established on the Bay Trail in the Richmond Marina where he often played to the waves, the sea birds, and people passing by.

Jeff deeply admired the mission of Sweet Relief and left a bequest to the organization, specifically to the San Francisco Bay Area Regional Fund. He wanted to make one last gesture of love and respect to the many musicians and their families in the Bay. Jeff's family, friends, and spirit invite you to make an additional contribution if you are so inspired and able.
