Jon Silbermann was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a kind, compassionate, spirited, down-to-earth and lighthearted soul who deeply enjoyed connecting with people; he would have an hour-long conversation with the mailman if he had his druthers (and he likely had done so). He had a wonderful way of communicating - always supportive, always there to lend an ear. He used to say that the most important quality in life is curiosity, and he lived that way: perpetually fascinated and empathetic; a great appreciator of the things in life - big and small - that may otherwise pass us by.
Jon was a natural musician (a gifted self-taught piano player with a passion for blues and gospel), an Emmy Award winning composer, and the founder/original owner of JSM Music - a groundbreaking commercial music house. Jon had gotten his start in the early ‘70s as a copywriter with N.W. Ayer & Son, and used to play piano in one of the company’s music rooms during his breaks. In true cinematic fashion, one day someone heard him playing and suggested he try composing for ads. Jon wrote a piece for AT&T, and the next thing he knew he was in the studio bringing it to life with Tony Bennett - Jon’s face beaming with excitement. The smile rarely left his face when he was working on music - music was everything to Jon.
Jon’s music community also meant the world to him. He’d often offer to drive colleagues home after a long night in the studio, and happily give free studio time to the young, budding writers he’d meet. He was always there to support you however he could.
To honor Jon’s spirit of support for other artists, we have set up this memorial page with Sweet Relief - a wonderful organization that provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians and music industry workers in times of need.
Jon left us far too soon, but we’ll all be forever grateful for the time spent with him.
To use his words, he was a very cool cat.
