Born into an incredibly talented musical family, bassist Mike Porcaro began recording and touring in the mid 1970’s with such popular artists as Michael Franks, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs and TOTO. In 1982, he joined his two brothers Steve and Jeff as an official member of the band with the release of “TOTO lV”. Their father, Joe Porcaro, also an acclaimed orchestral and jazz drummer-percussionist, was one of a group of Los Angeles-based studio session musicians who became known as “The Wrecking Crew” who played many of the top hits in the 1960’s. |
The “TOTO lV” album, including smash hits “Africa”, “I Wont Hold You Back” and “Rosanna” earned six Grammys in 1983. Ironically, Joe Porcaro was performing the the orchestra pit during that year’s Gammy Awards. The iconic album went multi-platinum and yielded five hit singles.
“I am happy that TOTO and I can assist in this worthy cause,” Mike said as he learned that TOTO had joined the ALS Association to spread awareness about ALS during the 2013 concert tour. In addition, the band has formed “Team TOTO” to support the Walk to Defeat ALS across the United States.
Sweet Relief Musicians Fund had the honor and privilege to work with Michael Porcaro and his wife Cheryl over the past several years. Friends, family and his incredible band mates from Toto were all amazing in their support for the Porcaro family.
Donations to this fund will go to the family of Mike Porcaro to help cover some of the remaining expenses from Mike’s battle with ALS.
