Mental health experts also share their insight and our website offers free and affordable resources for mental help.
In addition to these helpful podcast episodes, they also keep a hefty list of mental health resources for musicians and all folks that need it. We're proud to be listed among so many wonderful organizations! Check out the full list below. Today, we at Sweet Relief announce our participation in the first-ever Mental Health Action Day, to be held on Thursday, May 20 in partnership with more than 500 leading brands, nonprofits, government agencies and cultural leaders.
Over the past two decades, suicide rates have risen, particularly among young adults. And the COVID pandemic has accelerated the already dire crisis, giving way to what many mental health professionals have called the “second pandemic.” Though more people than ever are comfortable discussing mental health, finding effective resources and knowing how to get help remains a challenge. Mental Health Action Day is an open-source movement of brands, organizations and cultural leaders to drive culture from mental health awareness to mental health action. Partners will encourage people to take mental health action -- whether for themselves, for their loved ones or to advocate for systemic changes. Resources and tools will be available for people to seek help in a myriad of ways from starting a meditation practice, learning how to support a friend, or advocating for change One way to find or give support, is through our Mental Health Fund, which provides therapeutic services and emergency response to musicians and music industry workers that are facing mental illness. In partnership with mental health professionals, Sweet Relief removes the financial barrier for musicians and music industry personnel in need of therapeutic services. “From Covid-19 to economic struggles and the continuing fight for racial justice, the other half of the twin pandemic is the rise of our mental health challenges,” said Erika Soto Lamb, Vice President of Social Impact Strategy at MTV Entertainment Group. “This is a critical moment to shift our culture from mental health awareness to mental health action and MTV is proud to come together with diverse cross-sector leaders on this inaugural day to encourage and empower people to take action -- for themselves, for their loved ones or for the systemic changes needed to improve our social and emotional wellbeing.” Friends and Fans Join Forces to Help NRBQ Founding Member with Financial Assistance True North Records and Sweet Relief have announced a June 25th release date for A Sweet Relief Tribute to Joey Spampinato, which features a lengthy list of friends and fans of the NRBQ founding member/bassist saluting him with 14 versions of their own previously unreleased takes of Spampinato-penned songs. A Sweet Relief Tribute to Joey Spampinato is an inspired album recorded by an astounding group of musicians who are all generously donating their proceeds from these recordings to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund to support Joey with his current health issues. The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund provides financial assistance to all types of career musicians and music industry workers who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability or age-related problems. Joey Spampinato, a singer, songwriter and bassist, was co-founder of the legendary NRBQ, a rock quartet whose genre-defying music continues to inspire generations of music fans and fellow musicians. Many of those musicians answered the call from Joey’s wife Kami Lyle and producer Sheldon Gomberg when they contacted them about recording one of Joey’s songs for an album to help raise funds for Joey when it was revealed he was battling cancer. Since March 2020, Bandcamp, the music selling platform for musicians and record labels, has graciously waived their revenue share from the sales of music to help the thousands of artists who's lives have been greatly impacted by the pandemic. According to Bandcamp, nearly 800,000 fans have paid artists and labels $52 million dollars since Bandcamp Friday's started!
Even though the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be closer and closer, with vaccines rolling out and smaller shows/tours starting to happen, we're still a long ways away from seeing the music industry get back to what it was. Our COVID-19 Fund, for example, is still receiving applications for assistance daily from music industry workers who have still not been given their jobs back. Bandcamp recognizes that the need for assistance is still great, and will be for some time. They've decided to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2021, with the next one happening on May 7th. You can check isitbandcampfriday.com just to be sure. A reminder from Bandcamp about buying from them: "If you’ve started to feel guilty about buying music on any day other than Bandcamp Friday, here’s something to keep in mind: on Bandcamp Fridays, an average of 93% of your money reaches the artist/label (after payment processor fees). When you make a purchase on any other day of the month (as 2.5 million of you have since March, buying an additional $152 million worth of music and merch) an average of 82% reaches the artist/label. Every day is a good day to directly support artists on Bandcamp!" If you want to double your impact, we've listed a few artists that are supporting Sweet Relief Musicians Fund with their proceeds of Bandcamp sales! We're so grateful to those that make our work possible. For the live events industry, 2020 was devastating. Now, hope is finally on the horizon.
